Hotlinking is a largely accepted Internet term for linking to another website’s images. Quite simply, if you create an Internet site, somebody else may want to use the images which you have and rather than downloading them from your Internet site and then uploading them to their site, they can simply put links directly to your website. In this way, whenever a visitor opens their Internet site, the images shall be loaded from your account, as a result stealing from your own monthly traffic quota, not to mention the copyright issues which could present themselves or that someone may be trying to deceive people into believing that they are actually on your Internet site. In rare situations, documents and other types of files may also be linked in the exact same way. To stop this from happening and to avoid this type of situations, you may enable hotlink protection for your site.
Hotlinking Protection in Hosting
You can easily shield your content if you generate an .htaccess file in the website’s root folder, but just in case you do not have previous experience, you could use our hotlink protection tool. The latter is supplied with all hosting
packages we offer and could be accessed using the in-house built Hepsia Control Panel. The protection may be enabled in two simple steps - pick the domain or subdomain for the Internet site in question, then pick if our system should set up the .htaccess file within the primary folder or within a subfolder and you shall be ready. You don't need any programming skills or any experience with this type of matters, because there will be nothing else to do. If you would like to remove the protection at some point, you could see all the Internet sites which are protected within the very same section of the CP with a Delete button alongside each one of them.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Servers
If you have a semi-dedicated server
account with our company and you discover that someone has hotlinked any of your images, you can use the protection tool which we have developed and integrated into our in-house built Hepsia hosting Control Panel. Once you switch on this feature, a server-generated image will appear on the third-party website as a substitute for your actual images. You will only need to navigate to the Hotlink Protection section inside the Control Panel and pick the domain or subdomain your site uses from a convenient drop-down menu - it is as easy as that. If needed, you'll also have the option to activate the feature only for a specific subfolder and not for the website as a whole. Deactivating the function is as effortless - go back to the same section, check the box next to the given Internet site and then click on the Delete button.
